I've had a series of hardware issues with my MacBook Pro that have been dealt with under AppleCare. Apple care for desktops is much much cheaper than it is for their laptops too.

I highly recommend applecare on any desktop they sell, iMacs, Mac Pros, and even Mac Minis, it is 100% worth it, because you will not get any repair cheaper than the apple care since the labor alone is just as expensive. So if a logic board goes, you can pay upwards to $1500 for the part to be replaced and you have to pay labor cost on top of it. However on desktops you do not have flat rate pricing, you pay by component. Apple also warranties your repair for 3 months, so if the flat rate didn't fix your issue you do not have to pay twice. Apple care pays off if you need multiple repairs.

This means that if you only need one repair during the 3 years you own your mac then you do not need Apple care since the repair is about the same cost as the apple care anyways.

All Macbook Pros can be fixed with a flat rate of $310 anytime after the warranty is over, this will fix anything that is wrong with it as long as there is no damage (like cracked screen, dented, stepped on, etc) and non Pro models it is $280. How many people have actually found that they've needed repairs in Year 2 and 3? Is it worth the extra $280 on a $1800 laptop (15.5% premium)? Is there a 1 in 9 chance that my laptop will need repairs that costs more than 280?Īre there any statistics out there with regards to repair stats? The apple build quality is fantastic, and even today, my 5 year old laptop is giving me 3-4 hours battery life and working like a charm (outside getting very hot).

If nothing turns up in the first year, I don't expect anything to turn up in the next 2. I'm a comp sci student, so I can fix most problems (I upgraded the RAM and swapped in an SSD for the 2010 pro) I encounter. Of these, only the 2009 pro no longer works because it had water spilt on (and then turned on) late last year, and was replaced by a 2014 air, otherwise they were all migrations from Dell laptops.Īll of these models have had Apple Care, but none of them have needed any repairs or fixes, and it feels like the past 2 apple cares have been wasted. Long story short, over the past 6 years, my parents and I have used 4 Macbooks, a 2009 macbook pro, a 2010 macbook pro, a 2013 air and 2014 air.
